Introduction

Established in 2021, Protect Defenders zw Trust is a Zimbabwean organization dedicated to advancing human rights by bringing perpetrators to justice and supporting human rights defenders. Our foundation rests on a commitment to rigorous monitoring, meticulous documentation, and evidence-based advocacy. Since our inception in Harare, we have steadily expanded our national reach, particularly during the 2023 electoral cycle. This growth is reflected in the consistent increase of our dedicated volunteer monitoring corps.

We strive to gain a profound understanding of human rights violations by:

  • Unmasking perpetrators: Through meticulous monitoring, comprehensive documentation, and strategic media engagement, we expose the activities of those who violate human rights.
  • Building local connections: We cultivate a robust network of local contacts and collaborate with relevant stakeholders to gain invaluable insights into the local political, social, and cultural contexts surrounding human rights violations.
  • Leveraging technology: We harness the power of technology to enhance our investigative capabilities and amplify our impact.

Vision

We envision a Zimbabwe where human rights violations, both overt and covert, are eradicated. A Zimbabwe where those who courageously advocate for non-violent change, including the most marginalized and vulnerable defenders, are not only protected but also empowered to access justice, receive remedies, and secure reparations.

Mission

Our mission is twofold:

  1. Eradicate human rights violations: We are committed to eradicating human rights violations, with a particular focus on civil and political rights, as well as the rights of marginalized groups.
  2. Protect human rights defenders: We provide crucial protection to human rights defenders through a global network of partners and allies who stand in solidarity.

Theory of Change

We believe that enduring change hinges on the strength and resilience of local human rights monitors and defenders. These individuals play a vital role by:

  • Supporting victims: Providing essential support and assistance to those who have suffered human rights abuses.
  • Engaging with the government: Offering expert recommendations to government authorities, demanding accountability for abuses, and actively engaging in constructive dialogue.

These crucial actors require a powerful voice to amplify their struggle nationally and a robust support structure to coordinate protection efforts, build expertise, and maximize their impact both locally and nationally.

Furthermore, we recognize that no single organization or strategy can effectively address the complex challenges of human rights violations. Similarly, isolated local organizations face significant obstacles in their fight for justice. Our theory of change is predicated on the belief that lasting progress demands a strong, competent, and interconnected civil society – one that operates in a spirit of collaboration, solidarity, and shared purpose.

Approach

We employ a holistic approach to counter violations and protect human rights defenders, encompassing:

  • Monitoring and Documentation: Rigorous monitoring and meticulous documentation of human rights abuses.
  • Evidence-Based Advocacy: Strategic advocacy campaigns grounded in compelling evidence.
  • Protection: Providing critical protection measures for human rights defenders.
  • Digital Activism: Leveraging digital platforms to amplify our message and mobilize support.

Our approach is characterized by:

  • Responsiveness: A strong capacity to respond swiftly and effectively to emergencies and crises.
  • Flexibility and Agility: The ability to adapt and adjust our strategies to meet evolving needs and unforeseen circumstances.
  • Sustainable Partnerships: Building and nurturing long-term partnerships with trusted local organizations to promote lasting change through legal reforms and preventative policies.

Over the past four years, Protect Defenders zw Trust has developed specialized expertise in addressing the unique needs and vulnerabilities of:

  • Activists and Pro-democracy Campaigners
  • Civil Society Members
  • Marginalized Human Rights Defenders
  • Journalists
  • Youth, Students, and Ethnic Minorities
  • Migrants
  • Other Vulnerable Communities

This cross-cutting approach ensures that the needs of all marginalized groups are considered in all our areas of work.

Finally, Protect Defenders zw Trust remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting human rights defenders. We provide essential assistance, including protective advocacy, material support, and capacity-building initiatives, to empower defenders to continue their critical work despite facing threats and challenges.

Commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The work of the Trust is intrinsically linked to the achievement of the SDGs. While our efforts are most directly aligned with SDG 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), their impact extends across multiple goals. We recognize that sustainable development cannot be achieved without a robust human rights framework, a vibrant civil society, and a committed human rights movement.

This strategic plan addresses human rights violations arising from systemic inequalities, entrenched discrimination, and the marginalization of vulnerable groups, including women and children. We firmly believe that a rights-based approach is fundamental to achieving a just and sustainable future for all, as outlined in the SDGs.
